The students we work with live in a rural community. Many receive free or reduced-price meals. Some of these students come from single parent or single income homes. A few of our students have no one at home daily to wake them, make sure there is breakfast, and get out the door for the school bus. Some of these students have parents that commute 45 minutes to one hour to get to their job.
Even though they face these hardships, they continue to push themselves through their lives to attend school and make those around them laugh, smile, and be happy.
My Project
The students in our math classes receive a work problem, can quickly see their mistakes and correct them within seconds. With the use of bright colors and black dry erase markers the staff can quickly scan the class for the students' work and see at a glance any mistakes. Learning targets would include visibly seeing right away confident results within each student. It also helps students’ confidence when peers help out with results.
With good old paper and pencils we can hopefully break the habit of students continually using pens for math calculations.
We also use the whiteboards with dry erase markers for playing games and as friendly competition to use as a study tool for quizzes or tests.
