Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third grade bilingual class is made up of 20 students whose first language is Spanish. These students have been taught in Spanish from kindergarten through second grade. This year, they will continue to receive instruction in Spanish until Winter Break, and will then be expected to read at a third grade level in English beginning in January.
How will they miraculously begin reading in English? They definitely will not, unless I begin to teach them English phonics and reading skills now. My school district has provided me with neither materials nor instructions on how to transition my students from Spanish-only readers to bilingual readers.
I am therefore requesting materials to begin now, at the beginning of the year, to teach my students English phonics skills, as well as provide them activities to explore English word patterns. I am requesting a Vowels word card set, a Blends and Digraphs word card set, an Expand-A-Word Flip & Write Boards set(for prefixes and suffixes), and a Word Family Pocket Chart Activity Program. I will use these resources in direct instruction and small group instruction to explicitly teach the sounds that the English and Spanish language do not have in common. Students may also use these materials to practice independently during workshop time.
My third graders are expected next year to be successful in an English-only fourth grade class, and absolutely need a focused, smooth transition into English reading this year. These materials will greatly help make that smooth transition possible.
