My students are very diverse and come from many different neighborhoods in San Francisco. As a Civil Rights Academy, we strive to study and respect their cultures and communities. This year, a teacher on our team inspired us to create our very own grade level Green Book to support and advocate for communities of color.
Whenever we can, we take the classroom outside and explore our amazing city.
We have studied marine science at the coast and learned how to be better stewards for the environment after visiting our local Waste Transfer Station.
I am so lucky to be surrounded by bright and creative thinkers every single day. These 4th & 5th graders love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box. They have discovered the joy of tinkering and learning how things work.
My Project
My students will participate in 4 different field trips to Mission Science Workshop where they will engage in 1 hour of guided science followed by 30 minutes of free choice exploration and tinkering.
When children have the opportunity to explore engaging hands on activities, their excitement for scientific inquiry grows into lifelong passion.
Teachers and Mission Science Workshop educators develop a variety of lessons, including everything from making models of motors to exploring how scientists chemically determine the amount of calories in food. These 4th & 5th graders not only use real scientific tools and equipment, they discover interests they never imagined.
The work that Mission Science Workshop does with our students is critical to preparing them for the future. Unfortunately, our school budget can't provide this important program so we are asking a much larger community through DonorsChoose.org.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Ms. Kirman and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
