Mission Escape: An Educational Puzzle Room Experience

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is always busy. I believe in the power of real life connections to what we are learning about. In my class, we have a lot of academic conversations, we do a lot of project-based learning, and we have a lot of fun while we soar to new heights of knowledge.
You would not know it by looking at our beautiful city, but my students have to go without many things that other students in the same city get to have.
Many of my students live in poverty, and many of them do not speak English as their first language. Although they have these setbacks, my students are passionate learners. They enjoy coming to school and learning. They do not need much to keep them excited about learning. They appreciate knowledge and they are excited to discuss and learn new things.
My Project
This project is inspired by the popular escape room concept. In this activity, a group of 12 students will enter a futuristic space themed room. They will use teamwork, problem solving skills, math, and communication to solve a series of interconnected puzzles, story problems, and clues in order to complete the overall puzzle within 30 minutes. A certificated teacher will supervise, guide, and give clues in order to help find the solutions to the puzzles. Afterwards, students will discuss their experience and vocalize what they learned in regards to mathematics, teamwork, and communication skills. The supplies I’m requesting for this project will be used as decorations for the space theme and story, and to create the puzzles themselves. For example, the solutions to the math puzzles will be the codes to open the various locks that will be connected to the case. The stars, projectors, and lights will transform a regular classroom into outer space. The tunnels will form the physical part of the challenge to get through the room.
This project will give students a realistic experience with solving math and logic tasks in a meaningful and engaging way, like an interactive test preparation.
The puzzles and situations are aligned with performance tasks and questions they may see on the SBAC (state test) at the end of the school year. This is especially important for 3rd grade students, since it’s their first time experiencing the test.
The goal for this project is for students to use and build problem solving skills, strengthen their understanding and use of the standards for mathematical practice, and build and develop teamwork skills to solve problems.
