Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are anywhere from mildly hard-of-hearing to profoundly deaf and come from homes where communication is extremely limited. Most of them rely on the use of sign language, cochlear implants, and hearing aids. They attend a school for the deaf, which is the only one of its kind in our area. Students are bused in from surrounding school districts, sometimes traveling over an hour each way, to be serviced by our specialized deaf education teachers, audiologists, speech pathologists, and interpreting services.
Coming from homes with no communication, my students struggle with day-to-day vocabulary and experiences.
We are housed in a Title I school with a large number of students on free and reduced breakfast and lunch. My students are not only Deaf, but also come with other learning disabilities, vision impairments, and are below grade level due to their language deprivation and communication delays. Oftentimes, they are not offered the same opportunities as their hearing peers, which makes my goal as a teacher to advocate for them to have equal opportunities in all aspects of their life. I want my classroom to be a fun and inviting place that encourages creativity and student-led learning.
My Project
My students are visual learners and require multiple visual opportunities to access instruction. Our district recently got rid of all of our smart boards, and replaced them with flat screen TVs. Though these TVs are nice, they are not beneficial for my students, nor my instruction.
Deaf and hard of hearing students need interactive lessons during guided instruction.
Without an interactive board, this task becomes more difficult. When we had our own smart board, I was able to create interactive lessons, review games, and different visuals that my students could interact with. This is what we are hoping to get back. Instead of sitting and watching a TV screen show a flipchart where I have to click through the slides, having this Promethean Interactive Panel will allow my students to get up out of their seats and get a hands-on learning experience! Now, my students will be able to dissect virtual animals and participate in a virtual experiment with chemical reactions by interacting with the whiteboard. For my students, this type of learning is critical to comprehension of any skill or concept.
