This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are quickly learning to love and value reading. I need more books to keep this momentum going in my classroom, and for the rest of their lives.

I teach at a high poverty, high minority charter school in Houston, TX.

I need more high interest teen novels to ensure my kids are having great experiences while reading. My goal this year is to make my students love and value reading. The demographics for our school are as follows: 90% of students are first-generation college bound; 80% of students are economically disadvantaged; 95% of students are Hispanic or African American; Almost all students enter our school at least one grade level behind in math and reading.

My Project

All of the novels I'm asking for have been requested by one or more of my students. With these books, I will form book clubs, which will build my students' critical thinking skills. The students will also be able to use these books for their "Just Right Book," which is the book that they are required to read for 40 minutes a night for homework. Providing students with an abundance of books gives them the ability to choose their own book. I have quickly learned that providing my students with choice not only empowers them, but also motivates them to work hard in and out of the classroom.

This project is critical to my students' success.

I know that they will read more with a variety of books readily available to them. Growing my classroom library guarantees my students success in 8th grade ELA, as well as their other academic subjects. By providing my students with the tools to become lifelong readers, I am providing a critical foundation for success in school and the real world.
