Help me give my students the opportunity to improve their reading comprehension skills through these leveled read alongs and CD/MP3 Listening center that will become a staple (and classroom favorite).
Imagine, walking into a room and seeing 20 eight and nine year olds looking to you for guidance, wisdom, and love. Now, imagine being a new teacher looking back at them and realizing the enormous impact you have on these students, an impact that could potentially change their lives. I am a third grade teacher in an inner-city school that is known for violence, and unstable environments. 100% of the students in my school district receive free breakfast and lunch. However, these students are resilient! Our classroom motto is, "Work hard, play nice, stay kind", and that is just what they do!
My Project
Over the past four months, my students have started to develop a love for reading (YAY!). This didn't come easily, however. When these bright-eyed students entered my classroom four short months ago, reading was the last thing on their minds. I know what you're thinking, "At school the last thing on their mind was reading? Come on?!" But, you see, these students come from broken homes. They were in survival mode that day they entered my room. I had to work to gain their trust and build relationships. After that was done, I could finally show them that reading can be an outlet, a place to run away.
The materials to build this listening center (with the CD/MP3 Listening Center and level read along texts) will allow my struggling readers to build confidence in their reading abilities.
It will allow all students to kick back, and simply enjoy a good book. Working in an inner city school, resources like this are hard to come by. I have seen how reading has helped my students become more confident learners, and I don't want that confidence to ever be hindered because I can't provided them with the needed materials for learning.
