My students have heart, even when they're hit hard. Many of them come from multicultural backgrounds. Some have families that struggle to make ends meet, but they come to school regardless. Several are immigrants, or children of immigrants. Some will be the first person in their family to attend college. So many of them have been impacted by this pandemic. Many of them are also painfully unaware of their potential. I'm determined to empower them.
When I watch students who previously said they "don't read" tear through their new favorite book series, or when I learn something new or profound from talking to one of the students in our diverse student body, I know I am teaching at the right school.
I've been here for almost nine years, and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else. These are great kids, and I'm always seeking to adapt and innovate to meet their needs each new school year.
My Project
During a training meeting last fall, I was given some very surprising information by our school support staff. I already knew that about half of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch, and I already knew that the pandemic has impacted many of my students' families' jobs and food security, but I had no idea it was as serious as it is. I learned that many of my students are likely coming to school without eating breakfast, and some of my students have no food at home in the pantry at all. They are hungry, and it's hard to focus on much of anything when your stomach is empty.
In response to my students' needs this year, I have created a "Snack Stash" that is found in our student supply corner.
If a student is in need, he or she can come and get a snack from this basket during class. One of our wonderful school social workers has been helping me to replenish this supply (and I've also used a little of my personal money), but we can't keep up with the demand. The kids need snacks! Many students depend upon the Snack Stash each day, and they're very disappointed if they find it empty. By always having a few extra snacks available in that corner, we will be able to help more kids who are experiencing food insecurity at home, as well as those who just need a little extra something to help their growing bodies stay focused in class.
