As a special education teacher working with students with Autism and other significant disabilities, my students all have significant learning, language and communication deficits. Many of my students are currently considered non-verbal. We use direct instruction to build their vocabularies and language skills as well as their academic skills. These deficits also lead to difficulties in the social environment.
Helping my students grow, learn, and build their independence for future success is my ultimate goal!
I am constantly searching for new materials and strategies to teach them and make learning fun.
My Project
Books are an essential piece of every classroom and childhood. This collection of books will be used during a daily story time. All of these books have been chosen with my students' individual abilities and interests in mind. My students are beginning to show an interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
Students will learn to engage with books in purposeful and meaningful way.
In addition to story time, these books will be available to student enjoyment. They will be able to choose their favorite stories to enjoy during independent reading time.
In conjunction with these books with adaptive materials to make them accessible for my students. Students will be provided with individual story boards and pictures cards to aid in their participation during story time. They will learn new vocabulary, concepts of print, group skills, turn taking, sequencing, and so much more!
