This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school on the Southside of Monroe, Louisiana. Many of my students come from a single parent home. As their ELA teacher, I want to provide a flexible seating classroom for them. Many of my students do not read on his or her grade level. Due to this we struggle with getting students engaged in reading activities as well as writing. My hopes are to make our classroom more relaxing in an effort to help them feel more comfortable learning, and to help spark their interest to do better in ELA.
I have asked my students what will make ELA more interesting to them?
Their responses were about the same, " if we have a more fun environment or comfortable seating." Education is everything, therefore I want to provide my students with what they need and more to make our classroom more inviting.
My Project
Students will be able to read in a comfortable environment. Students will be able to relax and feel at home while they read and work on their AR goals. This will help improve their reading comprehension skills. By providing students with a "reading corner" with flexible seating, it will be used as an incentive to push them towards reading more.
Each day students will have 30 minutes in class to use the reading corner to finish their AR books and to take AR test.
Students have a goal they must meet by the end of each 9 weeks of the school year. This space will allow them to do that with ease.
