My Students

My students are in kindergarten through second grade. They all have a diagnosis of autism and receive a lot of special services to help with fine motor skills, gross motor skills, speech and language skills, and more. Their verbal abilities range from extremely fluent to non-verbal, communicating through picture symbols and gestures.

All six of my amazing students come from very different cultural and economic backgrounds and are all very loving, sweet boys and girls.

They love manipulative play, especially with blocks, Legos, trains, and puzzles. They all especially enjoy physical activity and any opportunities we get to venture out into the community.

My Project

We need a better group seating space so that my students can sit together to both work and socialize. Currently they each have their own desks which are too big for them and are easily movable, making them unsafe in case of behavioral outbursts.

With a large group table, my students can sit side by side and learn from each other.

This space can be utilize to increase students' social skills during snack time and arts and crafts as well as allowing them to engage in peer modeling during work tasks. When students sit in closer proximity to one another, they have more opportunities to model both behavior and language for one another.
