My students live in the highest crime ridden neighborhood in New York. However, that's not who my students are! My students are bright eyed middle schoolers who want to learn! They want to get better at reading and writing, and are willing to put in the work!
Although they are sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, on average, my students read, at minimum, two grades below their grade level.
How does this happen? The majority of my students, unfortunately, do not have the financial means to purchase books to read in their homes. Furthermore, they do not have anyone to take them to the library on a consistent basis. Therefore, over the years, they've slowly fallen behind in their reading levels. Despite being behind, they are willing and eager to work hard and get back on their appropriate reading level.
This cart is specifically for my English Language Learners and my students who need high interest, but lower leveled books. Books about Yeti's, friendships, summer vacation, wonder woman, and so much more will grab my students attention, and help them continue to fall in love with reading.
As more books come in that they are interested in AND they can comprehend, my kids now look forward to reading!
Seeing the looks on their faces when they pass their reading comprehension quizzes is PRICELESS! It motivates me that much to get books, because I am seeing their confidence in reading skyrocket!
The more they read on their level, the better their reading comprehension. As their reading comprehension increases, not only does their English improve, but their mathematics grades improve as well! Thank you for helping my students grow!
