In my 5th grade classroom I strive to encourage nonfiction reading, but this can be extremely challenging when you only have a select few nonfiction texts in the room...and the library is only open for certain hours on certain days. I want my students to have access to lively, exciting, and interesting nonfiction to read at anytime they wish! Students will benefit from this in many ways. First, nonfiction is the type of reading we do most often in our everyday lives. Recipes, newspapers, magazines, grocery lists, etc. are all selections we, as adults, come into contact with daily. I want my students to be prepared for life!!! Second, my male students thrive on fishing, hunting, and sports...they want to read about things like this and I just don't have any supplements (rather than 2 or 3 old, borrowed magazines) to fulfill this wish! Female students also request nonfiction on a daily basis; they love reading about natural disasters, famous people, and past US history. Finally, 80% of our End of Grade reading test is nonfiction...enough said! Coming from one of the poorest areas in North Carolina, my students aren't frequently exposed to many GREAT books. My school is EXTREMELY low in funds...my budget for supplies is $100 for the entire year! This is a big problem for me because I am a first year teacher lacking many different supplies. I would love to have all different kinds of magazines and tons of colorful, vibrant nonfiction books for my students to choose from. My 19 students will not only gain from this project for this year, but my future students will benefit as well! My 5th grade sweeties are precious and they deserve more than I can financially give them. It's only fair that I try to give them the best.
