Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, "The limits of my language are the limits of my mind." This could not be truer for my students. Their ability to process, master and comprehend difficult material is limited by their ability to understand it.
Many of my students come from disadvantaged communities where gang violence and drugs take precedent over education, and where parents are skeptical of the school system because so many have failed their children before.
We are different. My students are different. Each day they break the cycle of poverty and ignorance which decides the fate of so many in their community. Their motivation to succeed stems from a desire to better their lives at home and in the community. They strive to achieve at high levels and bring honor to their family. Their unrelenting determination inspires me to seek out new opportunities and show them that the world is so much more than their own backyard. Without them I would not be who I am. Without their passion, energy and charisma my classroom would simply be average. With them, my classroom is incredible. Without them our school would only be a school; with them, it is a home.
My Project
I teach English 12, SAT and CAHSEE Prep and my students are brilliant tell them each morning that they shine so brightly I need to wear sunglasses. Unfortunately, without the proper resources they are limited in their ability to comprehend the reading passages on the SAT and CAHSEE.The SAT requires students to have an extensive vocabulary and be able to apply it. Many of my students are 2 and 3 grade levels behind in English; as a result, reading a passage can be a daunting experience. Because of limited resources my school cannot provide my students with dictionaries, which are essential building blocks in their development of the English Language. These dictionaries will enable my students to compete at the highest level. They will no longer be limited in what they know because the world will be at their fingertips.

These dictionaries will mean freedom of expression for my students; they will open up doors of opportunity for them. Their chance of passing the CAHSEE and of scoring above 500 on the SAT will increase because of your gift.
