Help me give my students a book that provides mirrors and windows into the lives of young African-Americans. This book is current, engaging and the movie will allow an opportunity to pair with the novel.
I am a proud teacher at a Title I high school and teach ELA 11 to a group of 17 spirited young adults who all have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and are receiving special education services.
These students are spirited, honest, compassionate, and kind.
They love to move around, enjoy hands-on activities, and engaging in passionate classroom discussions. We have developed a strong community in our classroom of support and encouragement and are working to improve confidence in our academic abilities. We would like to create a warm environment where students can come to learn, feel safe and connect.
My Project
I have overheard my students talking about the movie "The Hate U Give" and are interested in reading the novel. This book allows students the opportunity for mirrors and windows, the ability to gain insight into the current issues that African-American teens are facing.
My students are passionate, interested in social issues, and making change happen.
Reading a current and popular novel can help ignite a passion for reading and inspire compassion. I am requesting a class set of books and the DVD. Students will be able to read, discuss the novel with peers, watch the movie, and make comparisons while incorporating film into the curriculum.
