Our school is a Title I elementary school. We are about 45% free and reduced lunch. We have a diverse population, with many non English speaking students from China, Vietnam, Turkey, Mexico, Congo, Senegal, Ethiopia, and many others. I see all classes once a week for 45 minutes. This year, kindergarten is our largest grade. Specialists see up to 25 students in each kindergarten class. I offer art club to fourth and fifth graders. Art club revolves around team building activities and open studio time.
My Project
Two-sided mirrors are needed for students to see the lines, shapes and colors that make up their face and the placement of their facial features so they can draw their likeness as closely as possible. Students will complete a pre-drawing of their self- portrait before studying and learning about facial placement and proportion. Once students are ready, they will use a mirror to start their portrait using what they see and their new knowledge of facial placement. Students will have the choice to render their portrait in realistic or imaginary colors, laying with marker, crayons and colored pencil. When projects are completed, they will be compared to the student's pre-drawing to see if they made growth. Students will assess their work and determine which portrait is more appealing and why.
