Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project covers two major needs in our classroom. The first is a need for books with diverse characters.

So often, the books in our libraries reinforce a dominant narrative that may not be our own- we need to see ourselves in books.

I believe children should see themselves and their families represented in their books. This grant will fund texts whose main characters are from many races and cultures (Jewish, Muslim, Latino, mixed) and all sorts of families. These books will be both windows into another's perspective, and also mirrors into their own lives as well. This is but a small step in creating a more empathetic community, but an important one.

The second is a need for entertaining, high-interest books and a cozy place to read. In his research, Dick Allington tells us that the #1 way readers get smarter is to read! Part of that is giving kids inviting, irresistible spaces to curl up to read. All year long, my students have asked for "more seats for our cozy corner." The bean bag seats and benches will thrill them and provide opportunities for more kids to be "cozy" each day!
