Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students possess a wide variety of backgrounds, skills, abilities, and experiences. Most of them have experienced, and still, experience marginalization and institutionalized racism. However, many remain open, trusting, willing and hard-working in the hopes that their commitment and struggle result in a better life. They are creative, strong, hopeful, powerful, and beautiful even though they don't know it or acknowledge it. Additionally, they teach me daily and push me to grow and develop as an individual and a teacher.
My Project
These books will enhance my students' reading comprehension skills while also developing their critical-thinking, problem-solving, and socio-emotional skills. These books will provide a validating, reflective mirror through which they can celebrate their voice, culture and lives. While these will provide mirrors from some of my students, they will serve as windows for other students as they will enable them to experience perspectives that widely vary from their own. Research shows that reading about experiences outside of their own develops empathy. My students will encounter books that reflect their identities while at the same time engaging them in the experiences of others.
