Mining AP Potential

Hooray! This project is fully funded

Mining is a way of life in many parts of Kentucky, yet has a large ecological impact on our state's waterways. I teach Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science to 11th and 12th grade students in a high poverty, rural school district in order to prepare them for college level science classes.

I teach one class as a "guest teacher" and so have no budget from the high school for lab materials. Local vendors have supplied us with some inexpensive materials that we have used creatively in class, and I really appreciate it. However, this lab kit is not available locally, and I simply do not have the funds to purchase it.

I would like for my students to understand how point sources of water pollution are found based on data collection and logically eliminating areas based on data analysis. In this case the simulated point source of pollution is a mine which my students can especially relate to as it is a local problem. So my students would get simulated lab experience that matches real life pollution detection. They would collect and analyze data that we do not have the funds to go out and collect ourselves. This lab simulates a college level lab experience and prepares students for the type of logical thinking that is required in college.

You will make it possible for my students to experience a simulation of real life scientific research so that they can see the importance of scientific work in our state and community.
