Over the 30 years at my school, I have seen a diverse population of preschoolers through 8th-grade students create thousands of ideas. As an art teacher, I interact with 500 young artists. What a gift as an art teacher to provide a rich education to a wonderful mosaic of diverse students!
Our school population is beautifully diverse with cultures, languages, learning styles, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
With this beautiful diversity comes an amazing array of ideas and artistic expression. The philosophy of arts integration at our school is built on the idea that arts integration can illuminate challenging academic content areas for students by providing them the opportunity to interact with the material in new ways.
My Project
My students will utilize the materials through the inquiry process and the engineering design process through STEAM. Students will create public art that will beautify and give a voice to the community. Students will create wall murals using the stencil cutter and stencil supplies. They will create vinyl stickers using the sticker making supplies. They will create t-shirts using the fabric cutting and stencil supplies. Students will use the tablets, 3-D printer and accessories to learn to combine coding with art work, invention and sculpture.
These materials will expand their opportunities to create and design above and beyond simple construction tools of the maker space within the art room.
These tools will allow students to utilize 21st-century skills to realize and implement the creative process. The students will be free to integrate their computer science skills that they’re learning with their math and science teachers in the art room. The students will be able to realize and design things they were not capable of doing with simpler tools by using the 3-D printer and the vinyl cutter. These materials will enhance the studios that already exist in the art room and provide the technology to allow students to learn the science and math of engineering.
