My class has been studying plant and animal life and is now moving into genetics and cell functions. I would like for them to be able to really see what a red or white blood cell looks like, what a leaf looks like when dissected, what xylem and phloem look like, what hair looks like, and any other thing they might want to examine. My students are eager to learn about just about anything. They become EXTREMELY excited by hands on activities. However, as high poverty students, they have not had much chance to truly act as scientists. They would truly benefit from having a set of high resolution microscopes in the class. We currently have no microscopes (high or low resolution). I would like to have a station of four (4) microscopes and prepared slides so that during any given week, each student can spend approximately thirty (30) minutes studying a specimen of his or her choice. The students can then have an image in their head better than any text can provide. Who knows? With this extra bit of knowledge, maybe a world class scientist will be created.
