Have you ever wondered what it's like to teach in a premier neighborhood Chicago Public High School full of diverse, inquisitive and delightful young people? Let me tell you, it's wonderful!
I look forward to school each day because my students are among the kindest teenagers I've ever taught.
Most of my students seek opportunities to take art classes as a way to balance their rigorous daily schedule and my department works tirelessly to promote creative problem solving through relevant and engaging curriculum.
My Project
I would love to kick off a new school year with a painting project! When I was a high school art student, all I hoped to do was paint but my teachers always waited until second semester... It was such a drag. Now that I'm an art teacher, I try to paint early with my students because it's unexpected and it "hooks" them faster.
With your help, my students will start the school year by making mini paintings on canvas based on their Identities, then curating a mini art show of our finished works.
We will begin the year discussing Identity and studying contemporary artists who focus on themes of Identity in their own work. Students will explore their personal and cultural identities before creating paintings of original symbols and emblems. This project will enable my students to learn about each other, build awareness of our diverse student body, and strengthen our classroom community. Additionally, students will develop painting skills and techniques as well as learn how to curate, arrange, and display an art show of their completed canvases.
