My math classroom is a place of challenge and discovery. Our school is in a small, rural area in the mountains. Despite being in a low-income school district, I strive to inspire my students, both in and out of the classroom.
I am looking to keep things varied and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
I try to challenge them to gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed beyond high school. As you know, it's not easy to keep a high school student's attention! I want to make my room and fun and interactive as possible.
My Project
My school is focusing on writing. In order to best incorporate writing into the mathematics curriculum, I'd like to add math journaling into the lessons. This order includes mini notebooks that would be used for journaling.
Journal writing can help students track their thinking processes, as well as their progress, while learning math in new and different ways.Math journal writing helps students in multiple ways.
I would like to purchase notebooks for the students.
Kids have the opportunity to reflect on their strategies and assess their own learning. Students practice putting their knowledge into words both verbally and in writing. Instructional focus is shifted from computation to problem solving and real-life application. The teacher gains insight into children’s abilities, opinions, understandings, and misconceptions. It creates a documented portfolio-like record of student growth and progress. Math journaling is an open-ended and naturally differentiated assessment tool.
