My students need 2 more "Manikens" which are mini skeletons (each student learns by having their own half) where students learn through hands-on creation of human anatomy.
Our staff provides a plethora of science classes for a smaller school and college credits at a reduced price to our students. Just in our science department, students can receive college credit for taking AP Physics, AP Environmental Science, and Human Anatomy and Physiology classes.
My goal is to offer skills and opportunities to students that can be applied to their future.
As a college prep teacher, it is my job to ensure that students have a hands-on curriculum with access to computers, printers, and common technology that they will be using in future jobs, college, personal use, and more.
My Project
The models are expensive and I have not found a comparable replica. We currently have 21 models and need forty. We are unable to keep up with the students’ demand for this way of learning and need more skeletons. Additional skeletons will also allow for more extensive units because there is less need for large groups and frequency of rotation. We continue to work to our goal of forty skeletons, so each student can embrace their learning by creating on their own half during class. Unlike one-time lab specimen used during labs in the past (cats $45-78 and fetal Pigs $17-29.95 each), the clay anatomy skeletons are reusable. The clay has a 6+ year life and can even last longer when stored correctly and not mixed. The skeletons are not offensive to students who may be opposed to dissection labs.
Students use a three-dimensional ‘Maniken’/skeleton that is manipulated to study each of the body systems.
The skeletons enhance our students’ learning through hands-on body system construction. During the Muscle System, students apply their knowledge of muscle origin, insertion, size, muscle striation, and orientation to create anatomically correct 3D muscles.
This project addresses our class, school-wide, and state goals by demonstrating effective teamwork, communication skills to give and receive information, and a rich extension of prior knowledge and skill that stretches a student intellectually.
