The school is located in an urban community, with a high rate of poverty. We have up to 30 students in every classroom each year. My goal is that the students become a community of learners and help each other grow. I try to teach my students through many different learning styles. We use hands-on tools, technology, books, videos, and more. We work in partners and small groups regularly, and students really work together to help each other be successful. My students come from a variety of home situations, so they are learning academic and social skills in all subjects. When my students go home, they do not all get the same academic support. This makes it extremely important to do anything I can during the school day to help them foster the love of learning.
My Project
I am requesting chart paper and markers. These materials will help me to teach my students a lesson, and then allow me to hang up a model of what we are learning so that they can reference it frequently. The chart paper that has a post-it back will be used when charts need to be hung up long-term. The markers will be used to create colorful visuals so that students can remember details and easily find the information that they need. I started learning how to do a mini-lesson while teaching reading and writing. Now, I use this strategy for teaching every subject. Students know that my lesson will be short and sweet, and then we will get to practice using hands-on tools, independent practice, or small group work. This allows me to teach one main lesson, and then differentiate the rest of my lesson. Students that understand can move on and practice, while I can assist others.
I love to teach my students to be problem solvers.
With a large class, I cannot always be there to reteach every lesson for them. If I can teach them to use the "tools" (charts) on the walls to help them understand, then I can teach them to solve their own problems. Rather than a child sitting and waiting for me to come around to them, they can look at the chart paper model on the wall and keep working. These simple materials are a great tool for the children.
