This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Imagine an English class where students do not know how to indent a paragraph, or a science class where students do not have access to visual aids. I teach high school English, Science and Study Skills in a special education setting. Our school is part of an inner-city district that is facing drastic budget crunches.
As a result, students rarely get the time to interact with technology like they should because of the lack of computers. In an ever progressing and technology based world, it is not acceptable for my students to still struggle with computer basics, like typing or indenting paragraphs. As they approach college, they will need basic computer skills to survive the work load of higher education.
However, with the addition of three netbooks to my classroom, students will be able to use technology on a daily basis in order to build comfort and expertise. They will be more engaged in the learning if they can research topics on their own, and more prepared for college if they can type better. Having the laptops allows my students to access stores of information previously unavailable to them. It opens the door to college and gives them basic survival skills.
With support from you, my students will have the chance to close the gap in technology that keeps them from computer proficiency. You will make it possible for them to access information outside of their textbooks and build the computer skills they will need in college.
