"I like coming to the library, it is fun!" said one student recently during our simple dinosaur STEM project.
Our urban, primary public Montessori school is home to 7 traditional preschool classrooms and 4 Montessori classes with 200 students ranging in age from 3 years old to 2nd grade.
This inner city school believes in positively reinforcing student learning and behaviors by providing project-based units of instruction that allow students to connect with the community.
The warm atmosphere on our campus provides a safe place for students to learn and grow into lifelong learners. These students need coding materials to meet informational and technology standards. The ones selected in this project have the added benefit of developing their social-emotional skills while building the foundational elements to coding so that they are prepared for serving others in the future.
My Project
Our school will intentionally introduce the youngest of learners to basic offline coding experiences that will develop social and emotional skills. For example, students will work in small groups to program Cubetto, a Montessori approved program, to navigate a course.
These offline experiences will develop verbal and written communication skills that will scaffold into more advanced skills as students learn the basics of coding.
We need an OSMO base and OSMO Coding Jam.
Students will enjoy the STEM based activities and truly learn in a playful environment. These "hands-on" activities will increase the skills learned, help the students understand the importance of effective communication throughout life, and develop self esteem.
