My Students

The students I serve at our school are curious learners who call the rural hills of North Carolina their home. They embrace challenges in their lives and at school.

Many of them have never been outside of the area, and we challenge them to be global learners and citizens of the world.

Our school serves both 5th and 6th grades, a crucial time for development when the brain demands answers to larger questions. They are becoming abstract learners and thinkers.

As the world gets smaller and technology abounds, our school strives to help make them proficient and ready for the 20th-century workforce, finding their place of importance in an ever-changing world.

My Project

My proposed project is to engage students in a cross-curricular, hands-on learning environment using LEGO MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 robotics. EV3 curriculum, including Design Engineering Projects, Space Challenge, and Middle School Science, is based on constructivism. This educational theory states that children learn best when they experience things firsthand and within a meaningful context. The curriculum, which is aligned to national standards, engages students to become more independent learners. The 21st-century skills they will develop include collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These tools along with the engineering design process taught through STEM prepares these students to be the problem solvers of tomorrow.
