My scholars are students at an urban, inner city school. It is a very diverse population, coming from varying backgrounds.
Our school is inspired by Reggio-Emilia practices, which means we value students' knowledge and background as much as we do the teachers.
We know that students progress and learn at their own pace, so we allow the students to share their understanding in multiple, creative ways. The students thrive in doing so, and genuinely enjoy learning. They are also very supportive of each other and encourage each other when some are struggling.
My Project
Students will be utilizing the MINDSTORMS in the mathematics lab classroom. We will work with the robots to apply math to the world of technology and science.
The STEM field is expected to see at least a 13% in job growth, yet only 16% of the STEM field is racially diverse; therefore, it is crucial to increase the exposure of students in urban schools to engineering technology.
This project will allow us to put STEM technology, specifically robotics, in the hands of students. Students will be doing projects such as calculating distance and creating line graphs using the data for the LEGO shooter. They will also be converting percents, fractions, and decimals to make the robot move. This creates an interest in STEM education as well as provides a hands-on, engaging application of math.
