Help me give my students tools to help make mathematical concepts concrete. Manipulates will help all students in math, not just struggling students, because they can physically move things around and understand why they work.
My students are sixth graders who have build a wonderful classroom community here at Stokes. They enjoy working together on projects and classroom tasks. We do a lot of small group work in the classroom throughout the school day.
My students are hard working students who would love some hands on materials for math workshop.
My students are preparing to move from the elementary building into the middle school at the end of the school year.
We work everyday in math workshop on skills that we are learning about in the classroom. We would love some hands on materials to practice the skills we are learning in sixth grade.
My Project
These materials will help all my students. Students who struggle can physically manipulate the materials and other students can use these materials to stretch there thinking about the concept at hand.
These math tools make math exciting for kids, they can see math actually being used aside from the typical paper-pencil, question answer-practice.
I have seen huge growth in my students every year from being able to use manipulates during math. Even though my students are in sixth grade, I see better test results when they have been able to practice the skills with some type of hands on activity.
