Help me give my students yoga mats so they can learn mindful meditation strategies, then independently identify when they need to use them and practice mindful meditation on their own!
I teach 2nd and 3rd grade students who learn differently, often struggling with traditional instructional methods and materials. These same students can and do remain focused and engaged when given appropriate activities, materials and instruction that support their learning styles.
These remarkable young learners become incredibly excited when they experience success, and they become motivated to keep trying!
This is why it is so important to use best practice instructional approaches and materials for their learning. Additionally, because some of my students have copious energy, it is important to give them opportunities to expend energy and learn to self monitor when they begin losing focus.
My students may not learn easily, but they have so many wonderful talents and skills they can build on to if they are engaged and supported in meaningful ways.
My Project
Some of my students have hyperactivity, some have autism and all can benefit from mindful meditation! We've practiced meditating a few times when the entire class had far too much energy, and now the students ask for meditation and breathing breaks.
I want all my students to learn mindful meditation strategies, then be able to identify when they might need to use these in class and independently remove themselves from an overstimulating situation, grab a yoga mat and practice on their own.
Research supports mindful meditation for decreasing anxiety and increasing cognitive performance, as well as remarkable benefits for students with autism.
I would love for all my students to have lifelong tools for self monitoring and self control, which will benefit them throughout their school years and into employment.
