My Students
I'm the School Counselor at a Title One Public Elementary School. I work with students in grades K-5 to help encourage students to be the best they can be academically and emotionally. Most of our students are in the socioeconomic group that receives free and reduced lunches. Most are from single-parent/guardian families, and most have not had the experience of Preschool before entering Kindergarten. They come to school ready to learn but with limited skills, academically and behaviorally. A large part of my job is teach them coping skills and ways to handle their emotions so they are ready to learn.
Our students would truly benefit from a "Cool Down" space in the room.
They could go to this spot in the room to calm down using the techniques I and the teacher have taught them. A place to breathe, relax, gather their emotions and thoughts so they can process what happened and how to respond, and then talk with the teacher. This would help to reduce the need to call for an Administrator to come to the room to remove the student to the office. This space would include a chair, stress balls, etc.
My Project
I'm the School Counselor at an elementary school of approximately 480 students. The students at my school range in ages from 5 to 11. Students of this age are learning how to regulate their emotions and find strategies to help them in this process. I help the students learn cool down strategies, problem-solving, and mindfulness techniques during my monthly lessons. My students would greatly benefit from a place in their class room, a cool down, mindfulness spot that they can access anytime.
My vision for this space is a quiet corner with a comfortable chair (saucer chair), a storage bin with different stress relieving toys, a 3-minute timer and a poster with steps to relaxing and collecting your thoughts before talking with an adult.
