My students need to be able to practice mindfulness activities (laptop and earbuds) in and out of their classroom. My school counseling office will have a social/emotional learning and mindfulness center for practice.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine the majority of a student body that struggles with self-regulation and self-management skills. These skills are often not taught at home, and the ability to recognize and regulate one's own emotions/thoughts DIRECTLY correlates to a student's academic success in the classroom. Imagine a student body that constantly struggles with distractions, sometimes trauma (both in and out of school.) Relationship skills, problem solving, and emotion management are new concepts to the majority of our student body.
These social/emotional learning competencies have a direct correlation to the academic success of all students.
My Project
New research shows that a students social/emotional skills in kindergarten can predict their academic success in third grade.
Mindfulness and SEL, when taught together, have the potential to transform our classrooms, schools, communities and our world.
Having a mindfulness, social/emotional learning center in the school counseling office, as well as being mobile (able to enter classrooms) will help students be able to practice emotion management, self-regulation and problem solving skills, ultimately having students reset and re-enter the classroom for learning. The laptop and earbuds will be used to run the mindfulness sessions for all students needing a "reset." The ultimate school-wide goal will be to empower students to practice self-awareness and self-regulation.
