As a school counselor in a large suburban high school of over 1,900 students, I have seen a tremendous increase in stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and mental health concerns in our students over the past several years. Numerous students come to our Student Services office to complete puzzles, color, listen to music, and take a break from their day when they become overwhelmed. After this break, they are able to return to their class and reduce the amount of time away from their coursework and be more productive for the remainder of the day.
Young adults are in need of positive ways to manage their personal and academic stress.
Social and emotional learning is essential at the high school level. I believe our students would benefit from a designated space, a mindfulness room, to regulate their emotions in positive ways. By practicing mindfulness in a relaxed and calm setting, young adults can realize the strength they have within and appreciate who they are as a person.
My Project
Our students need a calm and relaxing space to refresh during their day and practice mindfulness. We hope to create a warm and inviting space with flexible seating, cozy rugs, fitness mats for yoga practice, and mindfulness activities.
Providing positive opportunities to support the mental health of our students is our goal!
Mindfulness activities provide our students with tools to continue to aid in their ability to focus, reduce stress, regulate their emotions, and enhance compassion. These items will be a great start to creating this calm and relaxing space for our students!
