As a teacher in a low-income school with most students being English Language Learners and many of them coming from refugee camps, I have a large range of abilities in my classroom. I have some students who don't speak any English and have never been to school before all the way to students who are above first grade level.

Many of my students have faced unimaginable obstacles and struggle in school because of those obstacles. Some obstacles my students have faced are violence, abuse, homelessness, and hunger, just to name a few. I try my hardest to have a classroom environment that is inviting and welcoming for all students.
My Project
The books and activities I am requesting will help my students learn about being mindful and working on ways to be a positive and functioning member of society. A lot of my students struggle with self regulation and that, in turn, effects their academics. I think it is important to help my students learn positive ways to deal with emotions and these books and activity cards will be a great addition to our classroom.
By donating to my project you will not only help my students gain a deeper understanding of how to deal with difficult emotions, but also add more books to our classroom library that have characters that look like my students.
Students will be able to connect to these books because the characters and the plots have similar lives and characteristics to a majority of the students I teach. This is important because kids need to see characters in books that look like them.
