Help me give my students solid counseling curriculum, tools for coping with negative thoughts and emotions (gratitude journals, affirmations, adult coloring books), and decor to create an inviting space.
Do you remember being in high school? The excitement that comes with homecoming and prom, even joining the varsity football team. Do you also remember the scary feelings and emotions that come with being in high school?
My students are bright, ambitious, and creative-but this comes at a price to their mental health.
During their busy day, many of them need a place to hang out and decompress, process their thoughts and emotions with a trusted adult, and learn to use positive/healthy coping skills. Many of my students also have stressful home environments so having a safe, therapeutic space to be at school is crucial.
My Project
As the intervention specialist, I am responsible for targeting the social-emotional needs of students at a high school. I see about 30 students per week, on average, and do not have a budget/funding for counseling curriculum, office decor, and activities for students to engage in when they're in a negative emotional state (which is, unfortunately, often). My students are often overwhelmed with big emotions and don't have the emotional abilities to process them. I want them to have a safe, welcoming, therapeutic space for students to access mental health support at school.
When my students are calm and confident, they're able to learn and thrive academically.
I can see them achieving many of their personal goals and going on to be successful adults. This is a crucial time for them and I intend to provide them with the most supports so that they can navigate their feelings and emotions. Being mindful of all those feelings will empower them to be better adults.
