Mindfulness Matters: Increasing Social-Emotional Learning

My students need a mindfulness program to help them increase awareness of themselves, their emotions, and how to deal with their BIG feelings. Social-emotional intelligence is important and an extremely valuable skill to hone.

My Students

My amazing students are bright, energetic, eager, fun, and just plain cool; I am so lucky to be their teacher! My students have a variety of needs and I want to give them the chance to do their best.

This project focuses on providing my students with a program that will encourage mindfulness, self-awareness, and self-control.

I have found a wonderful program called 'innerEXPLORER' which has short auidio-guided practices to deep breathing, focusing on inner thoughts and many more. It is a perfect transition for our class, as we have been practicing daily reflection and guided breathing exercises.

My students have embraced our reflection time and have poignant things to say about the day, both positive and 'delta' (things we will do better tomorrow). I love the idea of adding this social-emotional practice to our daily routine, to guide these sweet children to be more mindful, self-aware individuals.

My Project

If you popped your head into our 1st-grade classroom, you would see warm rugs, flexible seating, and children working where they are most comfortable. We encourage teamwork and collaboration and emphasize the value of different strategies and thinking patterns.

At the end of the day, we gather on the carpet together to reflect, taking time to meditate and breathe before listing our 'positives' and 'deltas' on the board.

We don't emphasize negatives... we call these 'deltas', and they are events, reactions, and attitudes that we recognize as something we could improve on tomorrow. The students all participate in the breathing exercises and often suggest we stop and breathe when things get a little nutty during our day.

I want to use this educational program at the beginning of the day to prepare ourselves to be mindful, aware, and present. I would like to add the books to our library so that students can read them at will and practice on their own.

I am so excited to add this program to our classroom and watch my 6 and 7-year-olds learn coping skills, mindfulness strategies, and improve class unity through compassion and empathy.
