Help me give my students sensory tools like the bubble tube and balance boards to teach them relaxation and behavioral and emotional regulation skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our students are highly talented, resilient and open to learning new skills. Our Title I, K-8 school is located in a low income, high crime area in which many of our students are exposed to chronic stressors at home and in the surrounding community.
Our students have challenges with behavioral and emotional regulation which makes learning difficult; however they are excited and eager to learn.
Many of our Middle Grade students report feeling stressed out and not motivated at school especially when presented with academic and social challenges. Our students are resilient and want to be successful but some lack the behavioral and emotional regulation tools needed to weather storms of frustration, anxiety and possible chaotic moments. This initiative will equip our students with skills they can build upon to use at school, home and in the community.
At our Title I school, the Student Support Services Team, has created a Mindfulness Room for our students. We have consulted with a student who is pursuing a graduate program in Occupational Therapy, an Occupational Therapist (OT) and a School Psychologist to determine the most appropriate tools for this project. The Mindfulness Room is designed to provide a calming space to support our behaviorally and emotionally dysregulated students. Students in grades 4 to 8 will utilize this space during weekly cognitive behavior therapy groups. They will master strategies to maximize their learning potential and ultimately generalize these skills to the classroom setting.
Our goal is to incorporate sensory tools commonly used by occupational therapists to increase self-regulation, improve focus and increase participation.
These tools will provide students opportunities to practice body awareness, relaxation and self-control in a safe and nurturing environment. Specifically the bubble tube will provide visual stimulation to foster relaxation; therapy and kinetic sand will be used to relieve stress, help students maintain their focus during group and provide a sensory outlet when frustrated. The standing balance disc and balance cushions will teach students body awareness, increase core strength, improve posture and balance and improve attention. Our team is so excited about the Mindfulness Room. We hope you are excited as well!
