My students are all in 7th grade and have disabilities ranging from Autism Spectrum Disorder, to learning disabilities, to visual and hearing impairments and more. I am lucky enough to work in an environment that is moving towards inclusion, and my goal every day is to chip away at barriers that stand in the way of my students having equitable access to their learning environment. Throughout my day, I provide support in the general education setting, and I also teach a small group ELA and math class for students with more discrepant needs.
Every day, I make sure that my students know that they are loved, that my classroom is a safe environment, and that I am so proud to be their teacher.
Many of them come to school with baggage from home, knowing that they will face challenges throughout their entire school day. The reason that I am asking you to support this project is because these students are the kindest, most hard-working, genuine kids, despite all of these factors.
My Project
The majority of resources that are available for teachers and students revolve around core content areas: ELA, math, science and social studies. However, current research has shown the importance of teaching the whole child and supporting their social-emotional needs, as well as their academic needs. When students feel safe and have a space for self-regulation, they are more prepared to meet the heavy demands of life and school.
“Mindfulness is a powerful tool that supports children in calming themselves, focusing their attention, and interacting effectively with others, all critical skills for functioning well in school and in life,” said Amy Saltzman, director of the Association for Mindfulness in Education, and director of Still Quiet Place.
For this project, I am requesting yoga mats and essential oils to introduce students to practice of mindfulness.
Some of the activities that students will be engaging in will include journaling, focused breathing, meditation, and choosing a focus for class time.
