Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 100% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is located in the Bronx.
We are a high school that supports creativity.
This year our school has taken a huge budget cut. Even though we had this budget cut, it is all about the kids. We decided to implement Mindfulness Practices in our classrooms. From survey responses, there was a vast amount of students interested in mindfulness. A few teachers and I decided to implement mindfulness into the ELA classes.. We didn't realize the overhead that was involved. After having the first practices start up sessions, we saw how the students loved this. It gave them time to take relax and pull themselves together before class instruction. It all cannot be jumping in to the academics, the students need some time to generate positive energy.
My Project
The goal of this project is to take mindfulness directly to the classroom so that students can stay in their class rather than leaving when they get overwhelmed. The teachers will receive support for using mindfulness in the classroom. We hope to have Social Work Practicum Students to help support the teachers as they implement this program.
Incorporating mindfulness at the classroom level is so important because our school district is in an area of high poverty, trauma and toxic stress (high ACE scores).
Students need to come into class and get to a better place in their minds. By incorporating 2-3 minute daily mindfulness practices, the students can relieve stress and negativity.
These supplies (bells, and books are mindfulness resources) are ones that teacher often use personal funds to buy.
