Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with the most awesome kids in the world. I love how excited they get when they get hands-on opportunities to learn. The children at the school live in the most impoverished neighborhoods in the state. Regardless of their socioeconomic the parents volunteer a ton at the school. There is an exceptional staff and principal as well. However the one piece missing is support for mental health, mindfulness for the students, and direct instruction on how to become a resilient learner. Calm and centered student learn more, make better decisions, and are better friends. The ability to calm yourself in the midst of fear, frustration, and anger is a skill that makes these children resilient the difficulty in life.
My Project
I have fifty-five hands on lessons to teach my students to be able to relax and focus their minds so they can learn at school and anywhere they go in life. I need these materials to teach the lessons and give them concrete ways to learn abstract ideas. The goal is to help them feel confident, resilient, and in control of themselves. The sensory table is an exciting and engaging way to use the sense of touch and it a powerful tool for relaxation. The musical instruments teach them how to listen and focus their mind, by teaching them how to tune out unnecessary noise and gain greater mental focus. I want to use all of these hands on tools to help my students to connect to their emotions and deepen their understanding of themselves and how to appreciate the beauty in the world and more importantly, in themselves.
