My students need these coloring books, colored pencils and inspirational pencils to remember the importance of being mindful and practicing whole body self control.
I have a group of 25 first graders this year. Many of my students are suffering hardships at home, have endured some type of abuse or are not getting any academic support from their family. With this being said, they still come into our classroom every day ready to learn. They are eager to see what the day holds, they adhere to our classroom rules and treat each other with respect. I want to make sure that they have everything that they need to succeed in school. This is my privilege. Teaching for me is not just a job, it is a profession that I have always wanted. It is one of the most rewarding professions.
My Project
Our school is all about Mindfulness and Responsive Classroom. We believe that students who are mindful will make good choices and exhibit positive self control.
A mindful classroom is a learning, respectful classroom.
Students who are able to be in full control of their actions and bodies can make well thought out decisions. We teach our students different breathing exercises and ways to calm their bodies and regain focus. We also teach them how to decide when they may need a break. It is so important to focus on what they are doing well.
Every day after lunch, we start with a mindful moment. I allow the students a few minutes to color quietly and listen to soft music. It is my hope that these coloring books, colored pencils and inspirational pencils will offer them the tools they need to be mindful and focus on themselves.
