As a dual-language bilingual fourth grade teacher, I have a combined class of Spanish native speakers and English native speakers. My students study reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in both Spanish and English.
My students come to school to receive a high-quality education.
However, they face many roadblocks. The majority of my students come from low-income households in which they struggle to have their basic needs met on a daily basis. This can cause an immense amount of stress on them, making it hard for them to cope with school situations and being ready to learn. I am hopeful of boosting their ability to overcome these challenges by providing movement activities, community building activities, flexible seating options, and by creating a safe environment to learn.
My Project
Every day, my students come to school not being able to focus on learning because they have not fully developed the skills to cope with life events that are happening outside of school. They also struggle to make smooth transitions from their home environment to their school environment.
My students need a CD player, CDs, and headphones to help them become relaxed, mindful, and ready to learn.
These calming CDs will help all of my students to transition to the school setting. They will be able to use these CD players and headphones as needed to help themselves be ready to learn or to calm down when they are upset.
