I teach 21 of the best 4th graders. They are strong, resilient, and independent, but need a little extra coaching on their social-emotional skills. They aren't afraid to stand up for themselves or their friends, but sometimes don't know how to do that respectfully. We do team-building activities twice a week and they have already shown so much growth in reflecting on their behaviors and emotions. I would love to give them more tools to help them grow even more.

My Project
One way my students can practice mindfulness is at our calm down corner. However, I have noticed that this group of students needs tools and strategies to use when they are there. These tools will give students guidance when calming down and reflecting on what they need to change when they return to the learning activity.
When I roll this project out, students will have the chance to test out all the choices for our calm down corner.
They'll get to hold, touch, and practice using the liquid timers, monkey bands, stress balls, and scented markers to find out which tools work best for them. We'll read the books during our read aloud time and they'll be able to reread them as an option at our calm down corner. We'll use the digital precepts during our computer lab time to watch inspirational videos about social-emotional topics and reflect how they connect to our own lives.
These students deserve these resources to help them grow in their social-emotional learning!
