I am lucky enough to be a P.E. teacher at two different elementary schools. Instead of the traditional PE setting in the gym, I have the opportunity to teach Mindfulness in a classroom setting.
Seeing my students leave the classroom in a more tranquil and balanced state is very rewarding as a Mindfulness teacher.
The students at both elementary schools are so enthusiastic, passionate, positive, receptive, and open-minded when it comes to learning about mindfulness in their own lives. Their energy and spirit is inspiring.
My Project
Mindfulness is a relatively new subject in elementary schools. There are no state standards that address mindfulness and not a lot of curriculum to choose from. My Mindfulness class is split it into two parts: the first part being more breathing techniques, self-regulation techniques, meditation techniques, and listening techniques, while the second part of the class is the movement aspect where we primarily do mindful yoga-like poses. I do not have tables and chairs in my classroom, they are replaced with yoga mats. The current yoga mats are getting very dirty and starting to fall apart.
With these requested yoga mats and yoga hotspots, my students can focus on practicing their mindfulness techniques, and not become distracted by worn and ripped supplies.
It would be so valuable for my students to be able to continuously practice mindfulness on new, clean mats because it creates a comfortable and positive classroom environment.
