Imagine walking into a classroom with a group of students of varying levels. Not the typical variation, but everything between a student not being able to recognize or even copy a number correctly, to a student that could keep up with end of year first graders! This is my class! My students all come from varying backgrounds - some students are English Language Learners, all qualify for free or reduced lunch, and many do not get extra help at home. The math centers that I am asking for are differentiated, which will provide the practice that my students need on their individual level!
My Project
As my kindergarteners are learning and growing, I find that their needs also grow and change. The student who seemed to be completely lost is now blossoming and welcoming challenges. The student who surpassed every kindergarten standard within the first few weeks of school is taking on a more “responsible teacher” role and is able to be my expert in the classroom. Even the student who hasn’t made as much progress as expected, is still working hard to conquer the standards. These differentiated math centers will cater to each of my students on their individual level. The activity tins and magnetic math cards work on multiple skills (patterns, counting, and addition), so my heterogeneous math groups can work with the same materials, but can be focused on the skill that each student specifically needs practice with. The flip and solve math boards, ten frame dice, and hands on market math center activities cater more toward my higher level learners. These center materials will challenge my students that have mastered the standards we are working on in class and give them the ability to critically think about skills they will be learning in future grades. These hands on math centers will keep all of my students engaged, regardless of their level.
