I am privileged to teach special education in a school of over 500 students. We have a diverse socio-economic population, so I strive to provide equitable experiences in the classroom for each student.
My students are bright, dynamic, and creative.
Most of them struggle with language-based disabilities that can make reading difficult.
My goal each day is to provide rich literacy experiences that connect with my students so that they can fall in love with reading and all of the learning and connections that can be found between the covers of a great book.
Educational research proves that students can't learn if they are hungry, angry, lonely or tired. Many students today come to school without the resources to be at their best for learning. These materials will help us to increase mindful practices at our school.
Our school counselor and I run a mindful morning club at our school to help students develop strategies and skills to better regulate their emotions at school, and to set the stage for a successful day of learning.
We need more books, a chime, and social thinking games in order to enhance our curriculum, and give our students more opportunities to practice mindfulness throughout their day.
