As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My students need yoga mats. I am currently getting my certification to teach yoga to students! I am very excited. While I am completing this I am doing my best to teach slow breathing, yoga poses, stretches and simple meditation practices to help my students connect with their bodies and regain control over their minds and their learning at the start of the school day. This helps release stress and anxiety my students carry with them and allows them to access their education with a clear mind.
As a public school teacher; I have the challenge each day of educating students who enter the classroom with overwhelming anxiety and stress.
Many students experience trauma and crisis at home, then are expected to come to school ready to learn. It is my belief that students cannot learn if they are unable to access inner peace and self worth. These yoga mats will help me incorporate yoga, stretching, and meditation practice into my classroom to help my unique and individual students access their education.
