Bozhoo! That is how you say hello in Ojibwe. I teach first-grade students in a school that is located on a Native American reservation. Most of my students come from generational poverty, which can bring trauma. Every year, I do my best to create a classroom family where each child feels safe, successful, and loved.
“I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand.” -Confucius.
My students start each day eager to learn, create, and explore. My job, as their teacher, is to help each child reach their full potential. They excel with hands-on activities that engage them. That is why I do my best to find engaging lessons that will help them grow personally and academically, so that they can develop a better understanding of the world around them.
My Project
When you are worried about things, it is very hard to stay focused. Many of our students are coming into the classroom worrying about things that are beyond their control. The items from this project will be used in five first-grade classrooms.
We want our students to succeed, and in order to do that they need to learn how to self regulate their emotions.
The panthers will be used as a talking piece when we are sitting around the rug. Each child is given the opportunity to hold the panther and share how they are feeling. The panther will also be there for children that are having a difficult day and need extra hugs.
We have learned that when we belly breathe, our bodies slow down and that can turn off the "fight or flight" response to stress or anxiety. Belly breathing reduces our heart rate and triggers a relaxation response. The expandable spheres will be used as a visual for children on how to belly breathe.
