My students need sensory objects, mini rings, pinwheels, glitter shake jars, and play-doh, to help them focus, relax, and calm down so that they can fully engage in their learning environment.
We are a large elementary school in the suburbs of Greenville, SC. We are fortunate to be able to provide a quality education to students from K4-5th grade. We also provide a wide range of special education support to children from the age of 3- 5th grade.
At our school, quality education is more than academic rigor, we focus on healthy development of the whole child.
It more than providing academic rigor and challenging curriculum. This year we have begun incorporating lessons for students, parent trainings with experts and staff professional development related to the use of Mindfulness in the school setting. It is our hope that through the implementation of Mindfulness in our school that we can help to prevent behavioral difficulties and increase self-awareness and focus.
We need your help to make Mindfulness Relaxation Kits for use within all the classrooms at our school! Our goal is to be able to provide a variety of supplies for teachers to build their own Mindfulness Kits. Please help us to obtain a variety of relaxation tools for teachers to choose from when building their kits to help our children become better learners, better friends, and future leaders in our community.
My Project
Children learn best when they are in their classroom and able to be fully involved and engaged in their learning experiences. When children become angry, unfocused, or disruptive, they are often sent out of the classroom and therefore, their opportunity to learn is taken away. Our effort is to create Mindfulness Relaxation Kits for every classroom in our school.
Rather than students leaving the classroom, they have the opportunity to be in control and redirect their own behavior.
When anger arises, the student can visit the calm down corner, take 2-3 minutes for a mindful break to calm down, and then return to their desk ready to learn. Students will have more control over how to direct their anger, resolve their conflict, and calm themselves down without ever leaving the classroom so that they can continue to their learning.
Our teachers will be attending a Professional Development at the start of the New Year to educate their students and implement mindfulness into their classrooms. For our students, it will be more than a new year, it is a new start!
